Packing

The packing of the yurt was almost perfect. It arrived at the destination almost without any damage.

Packing

The whole yurt came in 3 oversee boxes of high quality. On the outside there was not visible damage.

Damaged skylight

Everything but the expensive skylight was well packed - leaving the skylight with some ugly scratches. The damage obviously was caused by the metal shield for the fireplace that was placed inside of the skylight. The manufacturer was notified, registered the damage. No immediate action was taken. The scratches can probably be polished with a machine (€ 100 plus 1-2h of work).

Quality

Water proofing

The location of the yurt is on the Atlantic coast of Portugal. The part of the coastline is known for its hot and dry summers and pretty wet winters. We also get some severe storms once in a while. The yurt itself is positioned directly with influx of these weathers with no natural protection from wind and rain.

In the pre-order process I was asked regarding rain and I said yes – heavy rain in winter from November until February.

Thus we agreed on a PVC cover (as I thought). If you research yurts you can see many of them with a rigid PVC cover.

Some typical properties of PVC are durability, good stiffness, good impact resistance and excellent chemical resistance. In addition they are extremely waterproof

But what I received was a simple plastic cover comparable to a transparent plastic bag in shape of the yurt.

In the construction process I decided to not install the plastic layer in order to prevent mold

After 2 month of collecting quality data I made this small clip regarding water proofing. The essence is that the yurt is some kind of water resistance but it is not water proof. That means after heavy rain the yurt got wet in the area of the drip board and above. The inside walls feel super cold and humid and after drying off leaving an ugly stain.

Overall

  • The question is would I order another yurt from the same manufacturer in China. The answer is “maybe”. In my view the all points in value chain need to be improved:
  • Purchase process needs to be more transparent and customer centric. This can be done via
    • sales experts with fluent English (important)
    • Webpage with transparent and detailed product description
    • Modular optional products
  • Shipping process needs to be optimized.
  • Shipping should have been around $ 650 but the shipping company charged more than the same amount again for clearance. In total around $ 1.500 plus the transport fees to my destination.
  • Set-up instructions missing
    •  In a world of Ikea, video description and social media it is unacceptable to sell such a complex product without a spot-on manual. Here improvements must be made.
  • Pricing – even if the price of the yurt seems reasonable, the total costs for yurt, shipping, customs, material & building yurt platform, set-up yurt need to be added. And here I can easily say that the overall price is easily 3x – 3 times as much.
